Mild steel box bar in 1″ × 1″ section with a 0.7 mm wall — a light section, used for grilles, window frames, furniture, shelving brackets, signage frames and light partition work.
This is a light gauge — fine for indoor frames, display stands, light partitions and anything that carries only its own weight. It welds quickly but burns through easily, so keep the current down.
Two numbers decide what box bar can do: the section size, which sets how stiff it is, and the wall thickness, which sets how much load it carries and how long it lasts outdoors. Going up a gauge costs less than rebuilding a gate that has sagged.
Cut it with an abrasive cutting disc, and prime and paint it — untreated mild steel rusts fast in Sri Lankan humidity, especially near the coast.
