A Hanbon 350 mm (14″) heavy-duty pipe wrench in the American pattern — the toothed, self-tightening wrench used on pipe, round bar and anything a spanner cannot grip.

The jaws bite harder the more you pull, which is what lets it turn a seized pipe joint. That same bite marks the surface, so never use one on a chromed tap or a finished fitting — it will ruin the plating.

Pull, do not push, and keep your hand clear of the jaw: a pipe wrench that slips does so suddenly. Set the jaw so it grips with a small gap at the back rather than closed tight.
