A 4 lb sledge hammer — the short-handled club hammer used for breaking masonry, driving stakes and cold chisels, and light demolition.

Four pounds is the one-handed size: heavy enough to do real work, light enough to swing accurately for an hour. Heavier sledges are two-handed tools for serious breaking.

Check the head is tight on the handle before every use, and wear goggles — masonry and hardened steel both throw fragments.
